This week-end, the national Beachvolleyball Championships took place in Capellen. This year, the competition was organised in joint venture between the FLVB and the volleyballclub of Mamer.
On Saturday, 6 women teams fought for the title in a round robin system where Grethen / Zambon, quite logically, won their 5 games and finished first of the tournament. Vice-champion is the team Mander / Risch who successfully defeated the younger teams. It seems that in beachvolleyball, experience can always make it about youth.
Congratulations to Anne and Norma, who deserve this title, as they are the only team to focus on beachvolleyball, all year long.
In the men's category, the title was played on Sunday. 11 teams registered and the first round was played in pools of 5 or 6 teams. The semi-finals then opposed Decker / Richtarik against Schoder / Lux and Ondelj / Kudlazewski against Wirtz / Marin. After the semi-finals, Decker / Richtarik, who already won the tournament in Walferdange in June, then had to play the final against Ondelj / Kudlazewski, who eliminated Wirtz / Marin.
When all the games up to then were played in one single set, the final victory had to go over 2 winning sets. The final game of the day was really equilibrated and only at the end of the first set, Decker / Richtarik could make a slight difference. The second set was at least as equilibrated and up to a score of 10-10, no team could get an advantage. But then, a hard time was coming for Ondelj / Kudlazewsky and they lost 6 points in a row. But it was still to early to bet on a victory for Thierry and Roman. The team of Fentange realised some break points to open the match once again on a score of 16 - 18. But finally the experience of Thierry Decker and Roman Richtarik made the difference to win the 2011 championship.
Congratulations to the teams on the podium and hopefully see you next year, once again in Capellen, for the 2012 Luxemburgish Beachvolleyball Championship.
